In my paintings I’ve turned to the diagrammatic as a means to access the processual elements that were more easily embodied by my time-based pieces. Diagrams depict multiple dimensions within the two-dimensional space of the surface of the canvas. They show thought in process - a flow rather than a snapshot - and make connections visible.

Past-Future Asymmetry (Diptych) - Oil on linen. 2 à 40 x 40 cm

In this diptych the background was based on images of opalised fossils, and gradually built up using multiple thin layers of paint. This represents the slow vastness of geological time, and is offset against the linear/meshed structure of the Penrose-Minkowski diagram that overlays it.
